Canadian elections: Justin Trudeau wins but falls short of majority
Recommended for Secondary Grades
On 20 September 2021, Canada conducted federal elections to elect members of the House of Commons to the 44th Canadian Parliament.
What is the House of Commons of the Canadian Parliament?
The House of Commons of Canada (French: Chambre des communes du Canada) is the lower chamber of the Parliament of Canada. It has 338 members and they are elected for 4 years. The House of Commons was established in 1867 and was modelled on the British House of Commons.
The votes have been counted and current prime minister Justin Trudeau will remain in power. However, his party, the Liberal Party won only 158 seats. It fell short of winning the necessary 170 seats to form a majority government. So, it will form a minority government.
Other parties
The Conservative Party won 119 seats and will remain the Official Opposition. The Bloc Québécois won 34 seats and The New Democratic Party, led by Jagmeet Singh, won 25 seats.
Trudeau had called the snap elections in mid-August, barely two years after the last election. The public as well as the opposition had criticised this move.
Some of the main issues that the elections focused on were COVID-19, climate change, housing affordability and gun control.
