Celebration of Black History Month

Black History Month is celebrated in February.

Black History Month begins from 1st February and continues to 1st March. It originated in the United States of America. It is also known as African American History Month.

What is Black History Month?

Black History Month is the annual celebration of the achievements of the African-American people. It was created by Carter G Woodson in 1926.

How did it start?

In 1915, Carter G Woodson realised that the people don’t know about the achievements of black people.  He founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1926. This group declared the second week of February as Negro History Week. This was an initiative to recognise the achievements of African-Americans in US history.

The second week of February was chosen because it includes the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and former US president Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln fought over the enslavement of black people.

US President Gerald Ford stated to honour the achievements of black Americans in 1976. Therefore, it was officially recognised as Black History Month since 1976.

Purposes of the African American History Month

Black history month was proposed by black educators and students at Kent State University in 1969. The first celebration of the month was conducted at Kent State from 2nd January to 28th February 1970.

It was created to realise the contribution of African Americans in the United States. This month honours black people from all periods of US history. The black people include the enslaved people brought from Africa to the African Americans living in the US.

Where and how it is celebrated?

In the US, Black History Month is celebrated with a range of activities in schools, universities and museums as well. Moreover, it is celebrated within different communities across the country.

Every year, there is a theme of the month. The theme of the year 2022 is Black Health and Wellness.

Black History Month is celebrated in February in the United States, Germany and Canada. In Ireland and the United Kingdom, this month is celebrated in October.
