Chhattisgarh files case against central government for NIAThe Chhattisgarh government has approached the Supreme Court challenging the National Investigation Agency Act or NIA.

What is the NIA?

The National Investigation Agency Act was introduced in 2008 by the then Congress-led UPA government. It came in effect after the Mumbai terrorist attacks on 26 November 2008.
 	According to the act, the Centre could set up an investigation agency after terror attacks in the country without taking permission from the state government. It can supersede the powers of the state police in terror-related crimes.

Why is Chhattisgarh challenging the act?

The state believes that the police on the ground should be the ones investigating any offences that happen within the state.
 	 It also believes that the act ignores the federal structure of the country that is granted by the constitution. Federal structure means where the Centre and the states have independent jurisdictions or power to make legal decisions.
 	The Chhattisgarh government filed the case under Article 131 of the Constitution. Article 131 empowers and allows a state to move to the Supreme Court in case of a dispute with the Centre or any other state.

Surprisingly, the Chhattisgarh government is formed by the Congress party and led by Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel.

The Kerala government also recently used Article 131 to file against the Citizenship Amendment Act or CAA.
