China’s Moon mission Chang’e-5 successfully brings back samples to Earth

Recommended for Middle Grades

China’s Moon mission has some exciting updates. Let’s find out.

We read about China launching the Chang’e-5 mission to bring back rock samples from the Moon in November.

The mission was successful and returned back to Earth with samples on Thursday night.

With this, China has become only the third country in the world to successfully collect rocks from the Moon (after the US and Russia). These rocks are also the first samples to be collected by any country since the 1970s.

The capsule with the samples landed at Siziwang Banner in China’s Inner Mongolia region.

After launching from Earth on 24 November, the Chang’e-5 spacecraft landed on the near side of the Moon on 1 December. It landed on a huge lava plain known as Oceanus Procellarum, or “Ocean of Storms, which is a previously unvisited area of the Moon. From here, it collected the samples.

The samples from this region could help scientists understand more about the Moon’s origins and foundations.

The capsule with the samples is now being taken to Beijing (China’s capital), where it will be opened and studied.

China’s National Space Administration (CNSA) said that it will also let scientists in other countries study the samples.

This is just the beginning for China’s Moon mission. In the future, China also plans to set up a scientific research station on the Moon.
