Chinese monk rescues and finds new homes for 8,000 dogsZhi Xiang is a Buddhist monk living in Shanghai, China who rescues stray dogs. A monk is a member of a group of religious men who do not marry and usually live together in a monastery (temple).

Since 1994, he has been rescuing mostly dogs but also cats and birds. Right now, Zhi is taking care of about 8000 dogs, and a few hundred cats and birds.

He says that the number of stray animals has increased over the years. This is because as people in China are getting richer, they buy more pets. But sadly, many of them get tired of the pets and just leave them in the streets. In 2019, there were 50 million stray animals in China. And they only increase every year.

So, Zhi is trying his best to save the animals that he can. He works with some volunteers and keeps several hundred dogs at the Bao'en Temple where he lives. Right now, the temple even has chickens and peacocks.

While all this is very expensive, Zhi still tries his best to take care of them. He also tries to find them new homes. He has taken photos of every dog he has rescued and he says that when he is old, he can look at them and feel happy.
