Here’s a worldwide COVID-19 Update for our readers!

New types of the Omicron are being found and they are being decoded by experts in the field of health. They also said that there are eight different types of Omicron, and one of them is the most common. This could be held responsible for the rising trend in cases.

India

The third dose, which is administered after nine months or 273 days of the second dose, is currently available at private vaccination centres. The Centre opened up the vaccination drive for a precautionary dose for all adults.

China

Authorities in Shanghai say they will be more strict with lockdown measures. Restrictions are put in place as the COVID-19 surge in China’s financial capital keeps going. Putting electronic door alarms on doors to keep people who are sick from leaving, as well as putting people out of their homes so they can clean their houses.

There have been more than 400,000 cases so far in Shanghai, and 36 people have died as a result of it. It started in late March. Officials are still trying to keep the country’s zero-Covid strategy, which emphasises getting rid of the virus over living with it.

United Kingdom

It’s thought that the longest COVID-19 infection on record was found in a patient treated by UK doctors. The patient had the virus for more than 16 months, or 505 days, in total. Most people get rid of the virus on their own, but the patient had a very weak immune system.

The researchers say that long-term infections are very rare, but they are important because they could lead to new Covid variants. This is not the same as “long Covid,” where the virus is removed from the body but the symptoms stay.

United Arab Emirates

New regulations for schools and educational establishments come into force across UAE. The new updates to the protocol allow the resumption of all activities and events in educational establishments. It also permits parents to attend these activities and events provided they comply with preventive measures, including wearing facemasks in closed spaces.

All university students and staff in the UAE will be required to follow the Green Pass Protocol for vaccinated and unvaccinated students. The protocol also requires all university students wishing to enter dorms to conduct a PCR test once every month. New updates outlined the procedures for the gradual closure of educational institutions in the case of confirmed Covid-19 infections.

Pfizer’s antiviral pill

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended the use of Pfizer’s antiviral pill Paxlovid in patients with mild and moderate forms of coronavirus disease. However, WHO has recommended against the use of Paxlovid in Covid patients at lower risk of hospitalisation.

The drug, sold by Pfizer, will be included in the WHO prequalification list but is not yet available from generic sources. The UN’s health agency talked about the problems that low- and middle-income countries face when it comes to getting medicines and knowing how much they cost.
