Delhi Metro receives power from waste-to-energy plant

Delhi Metro receives power from waste-to-energy plant   Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has started receiving 2 MW (megawatt*) power from the East Delhi Waste Processing Company Limited (EDWPCL) in Ghazipur.

DMRC has become the first project in the country to utilize power generated from a waste-to-energy plant (EDWPCL).
 	The EDWPCL in Ghazipur is a waste-to-energy plant, having 12 MW capacity.
 	The power will be used to operate the Pink Line of Delhi Metro.
 	DMRC has already started various environment-friendly projects such as receiving solar power from Rewa Solar Power Project, Madhya Pradesh.

The Waste-to-Energy (WtE) plant

A Waste-to-Energy plant is a waste management facility that burns wastes to produce electricity.
 	The EDWPCL is a co-operative arrangement between the government of Delhi, East Delhi Municipal Corporation and EDWPCL.
 	The plant plans to mitigate* over 8 million tons of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) over the project period.

*Megawatt: A megawatt is a unit for measuring power that is equivalent to one million watts.

*Mitigate: to make something less harmful, unpleasant, or bad.
