Delta-Omicron hybrid variant discovered: COVID-19 update

A new variant of the COVID-19 virus has been reported in Europe and the United States. It combines the mutations from both Omicron and Delta variants of the COVID-19 virus. Scientists have named the virus Deltacron.

Information about Deltacron

The new hybrid variant arose through a process called recombination.

What is recombination?

Recombination is the process when two variants of a virus infects a patient simultaneously.

The two variants exchange their genetic material and create new offspring. According to the data provided by GISAID, the new variant is circulating since January 2022.

Effects of Deltacron variant

Scientists say that the deltacron variant could target the upper respiratory system rather than the lungs. But, the severity of the variant is still not defined.

COVID-19 India update

  • Amidst the rising cases of the COVID-19 virus, Indian health minister, Mansukh Mandaviya has called for a high level of alertness.
  • India is starting a vaccination drive for children in the age group of 12-14 years. The children will be given Corbevax vaccine which is manufactured by Biological Evans, based in Hyderabad.
  • It is expected that around 7.11 crore children will be vaccinated in this drive.
  • People above the age of 60 years, will be given booster doses.
  • The government has also decided to expand COVID vaccination coverage to younger children who are born from 2008 to 2010.
  • The government has decided to restore visas for foreign nationals from 156 countries.

COVID-19 World update

  • COVID-19 virus is spreading in China again. Nearly 30 million people are under lockdown in China. Many cities are pushed under strict lockdown while some cities are experiencing partial lockdown.
  • The cases are also rising in Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea.
  • The United Kingdom is seeing a rise in the COVID-19 cases once again. The government has issued orders of self-isolation if people contract the virus.
  • In the USA, the new Deltacron variant is spreading slowly. 12% of cases of the new variant have been detected in the country whilst the UK has detected 50% of cases.

World Health Organization(WHO) has stated some factors for the rise in the COVID-19 cases:

  • Highly transmissible Omicron variant
  • Deltacron(BA.2) virus
  • Low vaccination rates in some countries due to less information about the same

It is assumed that the new variant Deltacron will be the cause of the fourth wave of the pandemic. All of us need to take proper care of ourselves, follow safety precautions, and take the vaccines to win against the COVID-19 virus.
