DGCA advises Indian airlines to avoid Iranian airspaceThe Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced on 29th June that Indian airlines have been asked to avoid parts of Iranian airspace as tensions between the US and Iran remain high.

The aviation regulator has asked airlines to re-route their flights to ensure the safety of passengers.

According to industry experts, Air India – the only Indian carrier flying long distances – will need to take a longer route to avoid the closed areas.

This would add to its operating costs
 	The closed region falls in the path of westbound flights from India
 	The airline is already suffering losses due to the Pakistan airspace closure since India-Pakistan tensions went up in February after the two countries carried out airstrikes on each other’s soil

Military tensions between US and Iran increased after an American drone was shot down by Iran on 20th June 2019.

Several countries imposed similar restrictions after US President Donald Trump confirmed that he has almost started air strikes on Iranian targets.
 	Some of the world’s leading carriers including British Airways, Qantas and Singapore Airlines on Friday suspended flights over the Strait of Hormuz.
 	American carrier United Airlines also indefinitely suspended its flight between New York/Newark and Mumbai from Friday evening.
