Dinosaurs lived in the freezing, dark Arctic too

Recommended for Middle Grades

Scientists believe that dinosaurs were cold-blooded animals. So, they couldn’t have lived in cold places. Cold-blooded animals have a body temperature that changes with the temperature of their surroundings. So, if they want to be warm, they have to stay in a warm place.

However, now, scientists are wondering if perhaps we might be wrong and dinosaurs did live in colder places than we imagined.

What did they find?

Scientists found hundreds of baby dinosaur bones in the Prince Creek Formation (PCF) in northern Alaska. This is in the Arctic circle. They include bones of hadrosaurs (duck-billed dinosaurs) and meat-eating dinosaurs like tyrannosaurs.

Even at that time, which was around 70 million years ago, the Arctic was really cold. And it was dark for four months in winter. However, despite that, dinosaurs still live there and even laid eggs.

So, now, this is making scientists wonder, were dinosaurs really “cold-blooded”?
