Earthquake of magnitude 8 hits northern Peru

Earthquake of magnitude 8 hits northern PeruA strong earthquake measuring magnitude 8 on the Richter scale*, struck northern Peru on 26th May 2019 at 2:41 AM (1:11 pm IST).

The earthquake's epicentre was at an approximate depth of 115 km and its effect was felt in other regions of Peru as well as Venezuela and Ecuador.
 	Magnitude 8 is categorized in  "Great earthquake".

Effects of the earthquake

Yurimaguas is one of the cities most affected by the earthquake, with damages to buildings and roadways.
 	It has caused landslides throughout Peru and numerous damages to schools, temples and health centres.
 	The shockwave of the earthquake also caused power cuts in parts of neighbouring country Ecuador.

More than 15 people are believed to have been injured, with 1 death reported.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra has requested the public to remain calm and is sending teams from Peru’s civil protection agency to the affected areas.

*Richter Scale – scale of numbers used to tell the size of earthquakes. An earthquake whose magnitude is more than 4.5 can cause damage to buildings.
