Eat Street – Calzone!

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Calzone is an Italian food item which is similar to a folded pizza. It originated in the 18th century in Naples, a city in Italy, Europe. In the US, calzones are made from pizza dough and stuffed with meats, cheeses and vegetables. By the way, the calzone is pronounced as kal·zown!

Fun facts about Calzone!

  • A calzone is reversed and baked, stuffed with pizza ingredients.
  • It has pizza fillings like mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, and anchovies (a small type of fish). However, the fillings can vary as per the region or family.
  • The size of calzones also varies from country to country. In Italy, it is sandwich-sized.
  • Calzones are often sold by street vendors in Italy as they are easy to eat while standing up or walking.
  • Apart from baked versions, fried versions of calzone are also available and they are filled with tomato and mozzarella.
  • Authentic (original) calzone is made from salted bread dough.

Do you like Italian cuisine? Have you tasted calzone? Calzones remind me of momo as it is also stuffed and baked/fried! What does it remind you of?
