What is Shawwal crescent?

Eid al-Fitr is marked by Muslims throughout the world as soon as the first moon is sighted following the holy month of Ramadan. Shawwal refers to the beginning of Eid and crescent refers to the moon.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al Nahyan wished good luck to the people of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Muslims around the world on Eid Al-Fitr.  The Shawwal crescent was seen in Abu Dhabi when the first day of Eid was announced.

Spotting the crescent moon!

An image of the crescent moon of the Shawwal lunar month was captured in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. This indicates that Eid Al Fitr will begin on May 2nd, which is tomorrow (Monday). The moon could not be seen with the naked eye owing to the dusty weather conditions. In the United Arab Emirates, the public sector will be closed from Friday, May 6, to Monday, May 7.

Celebrations across UAE!

The UAE is experiencing its most colourful Eid Al Fitr celebrations in two years, with everything from hundreds of locals conducting last-minute shopping for feasts and get-togethers to tiny kids enjoying a day out at parks and beaches. With a decrease in Covid instances and the relaxation of limitations, the country may now enjoy an Eid that is “near to normal,” say experts.

Eid is a time for celebrating and eating, and food is a big part of the celebrations. Ouzi is one of the most popular dishes to eat in the United Arab Emirates. Luqaimat is doughnut-shaped dough balls dipped in honey and served with basmati rice. 

Family Entertainment

During Eid, there is a lot of excitement and commotion. Tourists and residents alike are welcomed to the emirate’s most popular shopping centres and entertainment venues throughout the Eid weekend. Events include spectacular performances and concerts for the whole family. 

Shopping

Many shops in UAE hold sales and discounts in the run-up to Eid. Most of the malls get into the festive mood, with discounts at department stores and big-name brands. 

COVID guidelines during Eid Al Fitr!

The UAE’s latest Eid Al Fitr protocols outline regulations for mosques and protocols for prayers, to celebrate in a safe environment. Worshippers have been advised to wear face masks and maintain social distancing norms, especially when nearby vulnerable groups. After the morning prayer on the day of Eid, mosques must open their doors for prayers.
