Emmanuel Macron secures a second term!

Recommended for Secondary Grades

On April 24th, Emmanuel Macron was declared the winner of the second and final round of France’s presidential election. He received 59 per cent of the votes, compared to Marine Le Pen’s 41 per cent. After Jacques Chirac, was reelected in 2002, Emmanuel Macron is the country’s first leader to be reelected since then. Emmanuel Macron is also the first person who has been in charge of the country for a full term.

France’s Voting System!

Voting by machine has been banned in France since 2008 due to security concerns. Only about 60 towns out of 35,000 in France still use them. Closed curtains let people vote in a booth. They then put their ballot in an envelope. When they finish the process, they will need to show a picture ID and sign a paper with their name on it.

Mail-in voting was banned in France in 1975 because of fears about possible fraud. Polling stations are set up for people who live outside of France. People who live in nursing homes are taken to polling places.

Counting of Ballots!

In order to register and publish the results, volunteers count the votes one at a time by hand and then utilise state-run software. The paper votes are manually recounted if the outcome is contested. After the polls close, the results are sent to the Interior Ministry, which is in charge of election administration.

Covid-19 and Elections!

Most of the restrictions on pandemics in the country have been dropped. The number of people who have been infected has dropped significantly this year, but there are still new infections every day. People who have the virus could vote. They should wear a mask and follow other health rules.

Emmanuel Macron stated that he is grateful that the people voted for him.
