Recommended for Middle Grades

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the first-ever torch relay of the 44th Chess Olympiad at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi. This year, India is holding the chess olympiads for the first time.

Torch-relay of the Chess Olympiad

India has become the first country to start the torch relay started by FIDE (International Chess Federation) for the first time.  The torch relay will be 40 days long and will cover 75 cities in India across 36 states and union territories.

It is a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, celebrating 75 years of independence. From this year, the Olympiad torch will travel from India to the host nation during every Chess Olympiad.

Chess: History and Learnings

The game of chess was invented in India in the 8th century. It was earlier knowns as Chatrang. As time passed, Chess reached many countries and it has become popular.

In today’s world, chess is used as an educational tool in schools. Ain’t that interesting? Let’s look at some of the learnings from the game of chess:

  • In the game of chess, every piece has a power of its own. If you take the right move and use the power of the chess piece, it will become more powerful. Similarly in life, if the person is given the right direction and the right environment, no goal is impossible even for the weakest persons.
  • Also, chess teaches us to be far-sighted and not to be satisfied with short-term successes.

India in the 44th Chess Olympiad

This year, as India conducts the olympiad, we have a bigger group from India and Mr Modi hopes that India will create a new record of medals this year.

The Chess Olympiad will begin on 28th July 2022 and will continue till 10th August 2022. The game will be held in Chennai, India.

The Olympiad is held in India for the first time and after 30 years in Asia. 189 countries are participating in the 44th Chess Olympiad and it’s the most significant participation in any olympiad held to date.

Mr Modi has advised the players to not take the pressure, and instead give their 100% while playing the game.

At Curious Times, we extend good wishes to all the participants of the Chess Olympiad. Share your thoughts in the comments below.
