Fishermen catch record 2000-kg ocean sunfish

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Have you read about ocean sunfish? This fish is a rare, giant fish that lives in the ocean.

They are commonly called Mola Mola and look like giant heads with fins but no tails. Mola Mola can reach sizes of over 3 metres in length and weigh over 1000 kg.

However, despite their huge size, they often live deep inside the ocean and divers hardly see them.

Recently, fishermen fishing near North Africa caught a huge ocean sunfish. They found the fish caught up in their fishing nets and called wildlife experts to come to see it.

While they could not weigh it, experts think that, from the way it looks, it must be more than 2000 kg! The fish looked like a round-ish pancake with huge, googly eyes stuck to its sides.

After measuring the sunfish and taking photos and DNA samples, the crew released the animal back into the sea. It is the largest sunfish ever caught in the region but there are bigger ones as well.

Tiny babies, huge adults

Ocean sunfish are the largest bony fish on earth. However, when they are born they are extremely tiny. And then they grow to be 600 times their original size.
