Ice climbing includes climbing frozen mountain waterfalls. Ice axes and crampons help climbers cut through ice and ascend. India’s inaugural ice climbing festival filmed its first frozen waterfall climb.
India now has ice climbing events and courses. Ice climbing could expand India’s sports and tourism and boost local economies. Mr Bhushan Kowshik, from Spiti Valley in northern India, co-founded the Piti-Dharr International Ice Climbing Festival. Professionals teach ice climbing basics over the seven-day festival.
A man smashes an ice axe into a frozen waterfall, sending fragments falling from over 650 feet. The only thing stopping him from following is a screw and rope bored into the ice. Indian mountaineer and ice climber Karn Kowshik is trying to ascend a frozen waterfall in the Himalayas at -25 degrees Celsius.
He has uploaded several travel photos and videos on Instagram. Mr Kowshik is one of a growing community of adventure sports enthusiasts promoting ice climbing in India. Climbers use ice axes, and footwear with metal spikes, to gently cut ice and climb.
