According to a new report, Goa has the highest amount of plastic waste per person in India.

Delhi and Chandigarh are the next two places on the per capita list. “Per capita” means the average per person. Goa generates 61.2 gm of plastic waste per person, per day (the highest amount of plastic waste per person in India).

The report was released by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE). It is based on data from the Central Pollution Control Board.

As per the report,

  • Just seven states generate two-thirds of the country’s plastic waste. They are Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Gujarat, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.
  • Nationally, India’s per capita plastic waste generation is 7.6 gm per day.
  • India produces 3.3 trillion grams of plastic waste per year.

Almost 66% of plastic waste is items like polybags used for packing food items, etc. This plastic waste is mostly not recycled.

We can help solve the problem of plastic waste by banning unrecyclable plastic and single-use plastic. We need to continuously promote recycling. Moreover, a global study on plastics says that 79% of the total plastics produced in the world end up as waste.
