Heroic animal: Bomb-detecting rat, Magawa, retires

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Earlier we read about the heroic animal – Magawa the rat who won a medal for bravery.

Magawa is an African giant pouched rat. He lives in Cambodia. There, his job is to detect underground landmines (bombs). These bombs can go off if people step on them.

After working for five years, this heroic animal is retiring. He is now 7 years old. And as he is getting older, he has become slower. So, the person who handles him decided to let him rest.

An organisation named Apopo trains rats like Magawa to detect landmines. The rats are called known as HeroRATs.

Till now, Magawa has detected over 70 bombs. Rats like him can search much quicker and safely for bombs. So, let’s thank Magawa for his efforts and hope he enjoys being off duty.

Animals do a lot of work for humans. Heroic animals like dogs can sniff diseases like COVID-19. So, we are thankful to all of them.
