Highest altitude marathon in Sikkim starts today

Sikkim is hosting the Gurudongmar marathon, believed to be the highest altitude marathon in the world. It started today, 3rd June and will be ending on 5th June.
- It is organised by the Sikkim Mountaineering Association (SMA).
- It is being held at the height of 17,800 ft.
The event is organized at Gurudongmar, which is one of the most popular tourist spots in Sikkim. The marathon has runners from India and other countries, in the age group of 14 to 60 years. Medical support will be provided to the runners as the Health Department and the Indian army are also collaborating in the event. What is the purpose of this marathon?
- This is a not-for-profit event to promote active lifestyles through sports.
- It has been organised to celebrate the World Runners Day, which falls on June 5.
- The organisers hope that it will help promote tourism and adventure sports in the state.

why is it only held in Sikkim why not Nepal
That’s a very valid observation dear Sanaa.
Sikkim wants to promote tourism and also celebrate the World Runners Day, so they have chosen.
Its pretty much the choice of the country. Marathon requires clear running tracks, so we are not sure if Nepal has the infrastructure to support this.
