How do blind people use cell phones?

Recommended for Middle Grades

Having a visible impairment (being blind) doesn’t mean that one can’t use a phone.

Cell phones are actually often a lifeline for many blind people. They can be modified to help ensure that they can be used more easily by the blind.

Accessibility options for the visually impaired are available for both Apple and Android devices. This means the phones can be used straight out of the box by them. They can use these devices without delay, just like anyone else.

What are some features of such phones?

They usually have a voice guide to help use all features on the phone. The voice guide says everything aloud that’s on the screen and every button.

Voice guides come in many languages. Some can speak over twenty (20) languages. They include English, Spanish, Portuguese and Turkish. The Voice Guide speed is also adjustable, as is that the volume which might be created quite loud. Moreover, the audio quality is extremely clear.

Apart from that, the phones have all the features that all our phones usually have. Some phones can also have a large keypad with numbers written in Braille (a system of printing for blind people).

Some popular cell phones that blind people use today include the Jitterbug Flip, Ray L5 Flip and BlindShell 2 Borque. Even the Google Pixel and iPhone can be easily used by the blind.
