India, China complete disengagement in Gogra, Eastern Ladakh
Recommended for Secondary Grades
We have been reading about the different conflicts between India and China for a while now. The recent conflict started in May 2020 after clashes at Galwan.
In a step forward towards resolving the issue peacefully, India and China have agreed to disengage in eastern Ladakh’s Gogra region. Disengage means to remove soldiers from an area of conflict. Now, the Line of Actual Control (LAC) has been restored in the area.
What is the Line of Actual Control (LAC)?
India and China share a border that is more than 3,440 km long. The Line of Actual Control (LAC) is a line that separates Indian-controlled territory from Chinese-controlled territory in the disputed area around the Sino-Indian border.
Important Details
- The Indian Army said that this is a major breakthrough after the latest round of talks between the two neighbours. Now, soldiers of both sides have left the Gogra region and are back at their permanent camps.
- The Army also said that both sides have taken down all the structures they built there temporarily before.
- The disengagement agreement will hopefully ensure both sides will observe and respect the Line of Actual Control in Gogra.
- With the disengagement at Gogra, India and China have now backed down in four of the six places which saw conflicts. However, both sides remain on alert in Depsang and Hot Springs areas in Ladakh.
- Both India and China have around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the LAC, especially in the sensitive region.
