India Travel Diaries – Jaisalmer!

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Jaisalmer, the largest district of Rajasthan is named after Rawal Jaisal, who is believed to have found the city in 1156 AD. Jaisalmer means the “Hill Fort of Jaisal”.

Picturesque Location!

  • The Jaisalmer town lies in the heart of the Thar Desert (the Great Indian Desert).
  • The town’s main attraction is the majestic Jaisalmer Fort. The fort is also known as Sonar Qila (Golden Fort), from which Jaisalmer gets the name –  “Golden City of India”.

  • Yellow sandstones have been used in the architecture of both the fort and the town, giving it a certain gorgeous golden-yellow light.

Forts and Dreams!

  • Jaisalmer Fort is a “living fort”. This means that people still live in it.
  • The fort contains a royal palace and several Jain temples. There are shops, hotels and ancient “Havelis” (houses) inside the fort area.

  • Jaisalmer also houses some of the oldest libraries in India. These libraries have rare manuscripts and artefacts of Jain tradition.

  • Lodhruva (Lodarva), Amarsagar, Brahmsar and Pokhran are some famous pilgrimage centres around Jaisalmer

  • The Desert Festival of Jaisalmer held in February every year is one of Rajasthan’s biggest cultural events. The festival attracts tourists from across the world. During the festival, camel races, turban-tying and Mr Desert competitions are organised.

  • The best time to visit Jaisalmer is between September and mid-March when the weather is pleasant.

Don’t forget out check out the cool dudes – Rocky and Mayur in Jaisalmer. Anyone hunger? 😉
