Fun facts about Mahabalipuram!

  • Mahabalipuram is a fascinating temple town. Also known as Mamallapuram, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site
  • The city was established by the Pallava dynasty during the 7th century CE.
  • It was named after the Pallava king Narasimhavarman I, who was also known as Mahamalla.

Shore Temple

  • It became an important centre of art and literature during this period.
  • Ancient coins excavated from the area revealed that Mamallapuram even had trade relations with the Romans.

Krishna’s Butterball

  • Arjuna’s Penance, Shore Temple, Crocodile Farm, Krishna’s Butterball, Cave Temples, India Seashell Museum are some of the most famous tourist attractions in Mahabalipuram.
  • The city also hosts the famous Mahabalipuram Dance Festival from December to January every year. It is a great opportunity for classical dancers from all over the country to come and perform.
