India is under the grip of heatwaves

India is under the grip of heatwavesCentral and north India are in the grip of extreme heatwaves.

The capital, Delhi,  hit 48º C on Monday, the highest ever temperature recorded in June.
 	Indian Meteorological Department(IMD) declared a  “red-colour” warning for Delhi on Monday.
 	According to IMD, high temperatures ranging from 42°-47° C will remain across northern India till next week.

What is a heatwave?

A heatwave is a period of abnormally high temperatures that occurs during the summer season.
 	In India, it is considered a heatwave condition, if the maximum temperature of a place reaches at least 40°C or more for plains, 37°C or more for coastal stations and at least 30°C or more for hilly regions.

Heatwaves in India:

Over the last few years, heatwave intensity is increasing in India.
 	Studies have shown that an increase in heatwaves is linked to more increase in El Nino events.
 	Global warming and resultant climate change are also considered as a  reason of heatwaves.

As a student, you can also contribute to making people aware of the causes and impact of heat waves. Try to arrange a session at your school. Discuss about heatwaves and the precautions, we should take.
