Indian Elections and Electoral SymbolsFor the 2019 Loksabha elections, India has an electorate* which exceeds 830 million!

Yet illiteracy is one of the biggest challenge faced by Indian democracy; a large part of our population struggles to identify their chosen candidates on the voting machines.
 	The Election Commission, thus has to allocate, separate election symbols for each political party.
 	An electoral symbol is a standardised symbol allocated to a political party.
 	The Election Commission has a list of almost 170 symbols collected over the years.
 	The symbols of all nationally recognised parties are consistent throughout India.
 	These symbols are chosen carefully so that every voter despite their literacy/knowledge can easily recognise it.

Political symbols have today become so important that many national parties consider their symbol as their political identity.

Here is a list of major Indian political parties along with their symbols:

Aam Admi Party: Broom
 	All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam: Two leaves
 	Bahujan Samaj Party: Elephant
 	Bharatiya Janata Party: Lotus
 	Communist Party of India, Marxist: Hammer and sickle with a five-pointed star
 	Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam: Rising sun
 	Indian National Congress: Palm of the hand
 	Nationalist Congress Party: Clock
 	Rashtriya Janata Dal: Lantern
 	Samajwadi Party: Bicycle
 	Samata Party: Flaming Torch
 	Shiv Sena: Bow and arrow
 	Telugu Desam Party: Plough
 	Trinamul Congress: Two flowers
