International Day of Persons with Disabilities – 3 December

Recommended for Foundational Grades

International Day of Persons with Disabilities is on 3rd December. Let’s learn more about it.

Let us understand, who are considered as ‘persons with disability’?

Person whose movements, senses, or daily activities are difficult because of their physical or mental condition. They are more often referred to as differentlyabled or specially-abled.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPwD)?

  • It is a day dedicated to differently-abled people.
  • The day aims to increase public awareness about the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities and to celebrate their achievements.
  • United Nations (UN) has been observing this day on 3 December since 1992.

How is IDPwD celebrated?

Every year, the day is celebrated with a theme. This year’s theme is “Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 World”.

On this day, people organise forums, campaigns, and more to create awareness of their issues. The Government of India has also launched a program called Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan) which helps the differently-abled.

In our daily life, we should also make it a point to be more supportive of the differently-abled and their difficulties. This can make the world a more equal place to live in!
