Judge Sri Srinivasan to head US Court of Appeals

Sri Srinivasan, an Indian-American judge, has become the first person of South Asian descent to become the Chief Judge of the US Court of Appeals for the DC (District of Columbia) Circuit. He succeeded Judge Merrick Garland on 12 February.

Who is Judge Sri Srinivasan?

  • 52-year-old Judge Srinivasan has served as the Principal Deputy Solicitor General of the United States.
  • He was also previously the first-ever Indian-American to be a judge at the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit in May 2013.
  • Mr Srinivasan was born in Chandigarh and raised in Kansas, US.
  • Srinivasan studied at Stanford University and taught at Harvard Law School and Georgetown University Law Center.

What are the United States Courts of Appeals? 

  • Also known as circuit courts, they are considered among the most powerful and influential courts in the United States.
  • The courts are divided into 13 circuits (areas), and each hears appeals from the district courts within its borders.
  • The DC Circuit is one of the most prominent and prestigious American courts – second only to the US Supreme Court itself—because its jurisdiction (area within its authority) contains the US Congress and many of the US government agencies
