We know that Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. But did you know, Jupiter protects Earth? It’s strong gravity is believed to protect us from asteroids and comets.
Most of the asteroids that come our way are from the asteroid belt. This is located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. These asteroids are of three main types.
Earlier in the solar system’s history, more objects were flying around. During that period, an increased amount of asteroid impacts occurred. That brought to Earth, water and other ingredients for life.
Of course, other collisions would have been disastrous. An asteroid likely led to the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Without Jupiter nearby, other such asteroid and comets would hit our planet much more frequently.
Additionally, not only Jupiter protects Earth, but also helps fellow planets maintain nearly circular orbits. The circular orbit provides stable climates over extended periods.
In recent decades, astronomers have been able to see signs of comets that have crashed into Jupiter. The signs they have left are huge. Just imagine if Earth was hit instead!
