Today, let us learn about the author R.K. Narayan. He was one of modern India’s most beloved writers. R.K. Narayan is regarded as one of the three leading English language Indian fiction writers, along with Raja Rao and Mulk Raj Anand. Many also consider him to be one of India’s best novelists. He passed away in May 2001.

  • R.K. Narayan (Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami) was born on 10 October 1906 in Madras (Chennai).
  • His family had eight children, including him. One of his brothers is the famous political cartoonist R.K. Laxman.

R.K. Narayan with his family

  • Mr Narayan wrote his first book, Swami and Friends, in 1930. It was about a made-up town called Malgudi. This town would show up in many of his books after that.
  • Over the course of a career that lasted more than 60 years, he wrote many books, such as Malgudi Days, The Financial Expert, The Man-Eater of Malgudi, and others.
  • People think that his book The Guide is one of his best works. He got the Sahitya Akademi Award for it in 1958, and it also became a popular movie.

  • Mr Narayan also wrote columns for newspapers like The Hindu and started Indian Thought Publications.
  • During his life, he won many awards, such as the Padma Vibhushan, the Padma Bhushan, and the AC Benson Medal. He was also chosen to be an MP in the Rajya Sabha (Member of Parliament).
