Footballer Lionel Messi wins record 6th Ballon d’OrLionel Messi won a record 6th Ballon d'Or on 2 December.

The 32-year-old Argentinian plays for FC Barcelona in Spain.
 	He has previously won the award in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015.

 	Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk came second while Juventus' Christiano Ronaldo came third.

Megan Rapinoe won the Ballon d'Or Féminin (Women's Ballon d'Or).

This is her first Ballon d'Or. The 34-year-old American plays for Reign FC in the United States.
 	English player Lucy Bronze came second, while Alex Morgan came third.

Liverpool keeper Alisson won the inaugural Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper, while Juventus' Matthijs de Ligt took the Kopa Trophy. The Kopa trophy is awarded to the best under-21 player and selected by former Ballon d'Or winners.

What is the Ballon d'Or?

The Ballon d'Or is an annual football award presented by France Football.
 	It is considered to be one of the most prestigious individual awards for a football player.
 	The Ballon d'Or award honours the player deemed to have performed the best over the previous year, based on voting by football journalists, coaches and team captains.
 	Since 2007, all professional footballers from around the world are eligible for the prize.
