As the year is ending, many dictionaries like Cambridge Dictionary and Collins Dictionary come out with the “word of the year“. This is a word that has been used a lot throughout the year and has had an important effect.
A dictionary is a book that contains a list of words in alphabetical order and explains their meanings, or gives a word for them in another language
This year, Collin’s Dictionary has declared “Lockdown” as the word of the year for 2020.
This is not a surprise as lockdowns have been an important part of the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Collins said that the “lockdown” really describes the “shared experience of billions of people”. More than 250,000 uses of the word “lockdown” have been registered this year. This is up from just 4,000 last year.
Other pandemic-related words such as coronavirus, social distancing, self-isolate were also on the dictionary’s list of the top 10 words. The abbreviation BLM, for Black Lives Matter, as well as the word TikToker were also part of the top 10 list.
Previous words of the year for Collins Dictionary include climate strike in 2019, single-use in 2018 and fake news in 2017.
