Mallikarjun Kharge is the Indian National Congress president!

Congress party has chosen a president who is not from the Gandhi family. By almost 7,000 votes, Mallikarjun Kharge, who is 80, beats Shashi Tharoor. Tharoor has worked as a diplomat for the UN for 20 years.

Karnataka, which is located in southern India, is Kharge’s home state. He is from the Dalit caste. Political experts think that this could be the start of something new.

  • Some experts in politics think that the Gandhi family chose the candidates to make the Congress party look less like it was run by a family.
  • Sonia Gandhi was the Congress president until her son Rahul took over for a short time in 2017.
  • In 2019, Rahul stepped down as president after losing an election for a seat in parliament.

  • Even though a lot of important people had left the party, Rahul seemed to still be president.
