Manipur needs peace, not violence!

Recommended for Manipur

Oh boy, things have gone from bad to worse in Manipur. The State government just gave their police the green light to shoot people on sight! Yup, you heard that right. Apparently, it’s only for “extreme cases” though.

And what led to this extreme measure, you ask? Well, it all started with a protest by some tribes who weren’t happy about the “Meitei” community getting “Scheduled Tribe” status. And now, we’ve got over 9,000 people displaced, hundreds of buildings destroyed, and chaos all around.

So, in India, there are some communities that are called “Scheduled Tribes”. These are communities that are recognized by the government as being different from other communities. The reasons could be because of their unique culture, language, and way of life. Moreover, they are granted special protections and benefits by the government under the law.

Manipur Unrest

  • The government officials are playing it coy and haven’t confirmed how many people got hurt or worse. But local news reports say “some precious lives were lost.” On top of that, the authorities are begging folks to keep the peace, but the rowdies keep on causing trouble. The Governor even gave the okay to shoot people on sight in extreme cases where all other options have failed.
  • All of this ruckus is because the Meitei community wants a special label called “Scheduled Tribe” status, and the decision to grant it has caused the Kuki-Zomi tribe to pitch a fit. It’s led to a bunch of fighting all over the place, and even some government officials got hurt. The government’s tried to put a stop to it by imposing curfews, canceling internet services, and issuing that shoot-on-sight thing, but the troublemakers just won’t quit.
  • It’s not just a local issue, either. Folks in Mizoram and Nagaland are getting worried about the violence, and their leaders have written to Manipur’s bigwigs urging them to settle things down. This is a real mess, and it’s a sad reminder that little arguments can blow up into big battles that hurt lots of people and property.
