Milky Way: Spooky object – Strange spinning object

A strange spinning object seems to be the newfound discovery that is keeping the Australian scientists awake in the night. The astronomers feel it doesn’t come close to anything that might have ever seen.

An undergraduate student working on this thesis was the first to spot this mysterious object. What he saw and heard, made him more curious than ever! There is a burst of radio energy three times in an hour.

Fellow scientists have also observed that while signals from the Milky Way typically switch on and off, this pulse is coming through every 18 minutes. That has never happened before.

What is it? – the possibilities

Before we talk about what it could be, it would be worth it to understand some of the facts:

  • Firstly, the object is about 4000 light-years from Earth.
  • Secondly, the object is extremely bright.
  • Last but not the least, it has a strong magnetic field.

For our little readers here is a quick revision of some fundamental ideas when we observe the Milky Way.

What is light year?

The distance light travels in an year, approximately 9460700000000 kilometres.

What's a magnetic field?

A magnetic field is a field that describes the magnetic influence on moving electric charges, electric currents, and magnetic materials.

So, what’s really making the scientists curious is that there may not be enough power to generate these signals every 20 minutes. Scientists feel it could be the remains of a star or it could be an entirely new object or a signal from another life form :-).

Before we get our hopes high that we aren’t alone with the universe, the research team has ruled out the last possibility as it doesn’t seem like an artificial signal.

From here to where?

At Curious Times we believe with patience, determination and continued observation come great rewards, most of the time. The researchers continue to look and investigate further on the “Milky Way: Spooky object”.

Stay tuned and let us know what you think about this mysterious object in the comments section.
