Recommended for Foundational Grades

In order to be good at weightlifting, Mirabai Chanu has had to put in a lot of work. Carrying firewood and water to her home in northeast India, she learned how to lift weights. One of the things that made her a strong competitor was riding in a truck at 4 am to train.

BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year award!

She won the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year award for 2021 in New Delhi, and it was a big deal. There were four other nominees for the award. It took Mirabai Chanu a long time to get ready for both the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games, but she did it. She also won Silver in the 49kg category at the Tokyo Olympics.

Mirabai Chanu is training for the Asian and Commonwealth Games that will be taking place this year in the United States. She was also given the BBC Emerging Player award, which is given to a young cricketer from a country other than her own.

In addition to all the medals she has already won, this award gives her a lot of extra energy and drive. “I am very grateful to the BBC because it is not only honouring the current players, but also the players like us.”, she said in a video message.

Importance of Sports for kids!

  • Sports give kids the chance to develop good character traits and learn good values.
  • Kids learn how to be good people and be fair players through fair play. In addition, kids who play sports can be good role models for their friends at school or in their neighbourhood.
  • Kids learn that they are part of a team that needs everyone to work hard in order to succeed. They also learn how to win and lose with class and dignity.
  • In addition, kids who lose often want to work even harder for the next time. They learn to respect authority, rules, their teammates, and their opponents.
  • Children who have sports experiences learn to have good self-esteem.
