Mumbai experiences heaviest rain since 2005

Mumbai experiences heaviest rain since 2005It rained heavily in Mumbai, Maharashtra on Tuesday, 2nd July, bringing the city to a halt. It had received such heavy rainfall in 24 hours, previously in 2005.

It has been raining incessantly (non-stop), affecting all means of transport.
 	Mumbai airport's main runway has been shut, causing 203 flights to be cancelled and others have been diverted (route changed) to nearby cities.
 	The roads, railway network, even the runways are all waterlogged.

The intense rainfall has caused the water levels to rise and overflow in the Tiware dam in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri area.

This overflowing of water has swept away many houses in nearby areas.
 	Many people are reported missing too.
 	In another place, some people died when a wall collapsed.

The India Navy is helping to rescue people stranded in flooded areas.

The public has been advised to stay indoors unless there's an emergency.
 	Schools, colleges and government offices have been closed, while private companies have asked their employees to work from home.
 	Intermittent* showers are expected today, with heavy downpour in some parts of the city.

*Intermittent: Not continuous or steady.
