New Material Developed to Repair Bone Defects

New Material Developed to Repair Bone DefectsA new bio-composite (partly biological and partly not) material has been invented for repairing bone defects. It was developed jointly by researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and City University of Hong Kong.

The new material is made  by combining a black phosphorous nano material with widely used tissue-engineering compounds.
 	Phosphorus is an important micro-nutrient for our body. It constitutes about 1% of the total human body weight.
 	Traditionally, thermal therapy (heat) is used  for bone restoration. But, it has the side effects of burning surface skin if wrong amount of heat is given. Using near-infra-red (NIR) that can be controlled to not burn skin, the new material fastens bone healing by multiple times.
 	As per the study, the composite is biodegradable and can produce non-toxic end products such as water and carbon dioxide. These can further serve as necessary bone ingredients.
 	The material is currently in the animal testing stage.
