A day on the smallest exoplanet GJ 367b planet ends in 8 hours. It is a little bigger than Mars, very dense like iron, and is moving around its star really fast.
It only takes eight hours to go around the star. It is relatively close to us – 31 light-years away.
What are exoplanets?
The planets outside our solar system are called exoplanets.
Key facts!
- Scientists are always looking for planets that might be like Earth.
- Scientists have been focussing on more precise details of the exoplanets in order to understand whether life can exist on those planets or not.
- They want to find planets that might have water and air and be like Earth.
- The smallest exoplanet called GJ 367b is small but too hot for life.
- It is too hot for people to live on or for plants to grow.
- Gas giants such as Jupiter are hotter, have more extreme weather and pressures, and don’t have the building blocks to support life.
- But other planets that are smaller than Earth but bigger than Mars might be good for life.
NASA explains why they are examining exoplanets and what makes exoplanets fascinating.
