New Zealand to charge cow and sheep burps!

Recommended for Foundational Grades

New Zealand has proposed putting a tax on the burps of livestock, especially sheep and cattle, to cut down on one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gases the country makes.

Methane, which is also called CH4, is a gas that is made in small amounts on Earth by natural processes. It is a greenhouse gas that makes the planet warm up. Methane emissions are mostly caused by the burning of fossil fuels and the raising of livestock in the modern world.

When a cow or sheep farts, burps or passes gas, methane is released into the air.

Fun facts about this idea!

  • New Zealand would be the first country in the world to charge farmers fees to make up for the methane that their animals put out into the air.
  • It is home to a little more than five million people, as well as about 10 million cattle and 26 million sheep.
  • About half of all greenhouse gas emissions in New Zealand come from agriculture. Most of these emissions are methane.
  • According to the idea, farmers will have to pay for the gas emissions they make starting in 2025.
  • The idea also gives farmers money if they use feed supplements to lower their livestock emissions.
