NITI Aayog reports on India’s groundwater situation

Recommended for Middle Grades

Hey there! Let’s talk about something important but in a interesting way. So, there’s this super cool research organization called NITI Aayog.

They did a report and found out that 21 cities in India are going to run out of water by 2020. Yep, no more water for them! And guess what? About 100 million people will be affected. That’s like a gazillion water bottles!

Water Crisis

  • Some of the cities in trouble are New Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Jaipur. You know, those big cities where lots of people live and do awesome things. But wait, there’s more! The report also says that by 2030, 40% of India’s population won’t have access to drinking water. That’s like almost half of the country!
  • Now, here’s the tricky part. Did you know that even though 71% of the Earth is covered in water, most of it is salty? Eww, who wants to drink that? So, people rely on something called groundwater. It’s water hiding beneath the ground, between the soil and rocks. Clever, huh?
  • But here’s the real problem. India gets 40% of its water from groundwater. That’s a lot! It’s like relying on ice cream to survive, but then all the ice cream melts away. Not cool. So, what can we do to solve this watery mess?
  • One idea is desalination. That’s a fancy word for taking the salt out of seawater. Chennai is already doing this, but guess what? It’s super expensive. It’s like buying a hundred toys with just one penny. Yikes!
  • But here’s a cooler solution. It’s called rainwater harvesting. You know when it rains and you splash around in the puddles? Well, instead of just having fun, we can collect all that rainwater and save it for later. It’s like keeping a giant water balloon for when we really need it. Smart, right?
  • Oh, and here’s a fun fact. India is going to be the most populated country in the world, even more than China. That means more people and more demand for water. It’s like having a really long line for ice cream on a hot summer day. Everyone wants a scoop!
  • So, my little friend, we need to start thinking about how we can protect and save water. Maybe we can use less water when we brush our teeth or take shorter showers. Every drop counts!
  • Remember, water is precious, and we all need to do our part to make sure everyone has enough to drink, splash, and stay hydrated.
