NRI Sikh engineer develops an Eco-friendly and cheap manual washing machineLondon-born Sikh engineer Nav Sawhney is using his engineering skills to help those in need.

He is planning to release a hand-operated washing machine that can wash 10 kg of clothes per cycle in 15 minutes. The machine will save time, energy and will use only 10 litres of water per cycle.

It will also cost much less than other manual washing machines at just US$35 (about ₹ 2,400).

About Nav Sawhney

Born to Indian immigrants in the UK, Mr Sawhney came to India for a year.
 	He was living next to a poor family in Puducherry, where he came to know the mother, Divya.
 	Mr Sawhney saw that Divya, apart from her other chores, was spending hours every day, washing clothes by hand. Electricity supply was also limited.

He decided to put his skills to use and come up with the machine that would help Divya and others like her.

Mr Sawhney says that the most important issue for him was to lessen the bad effects of all the hard work of manual washing on health as Divya often had muscle and back pain.
