Our planet: How much water does Earth have?

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Our planet, Earth is a very special planet. It’s our home and the only place where life exists (that we have found till now).

One important thing that Earth has a lot of is water. Water is a very important reason why we exist. So how much water is there exactly on Earth?

Water is everywhere on Earth, even our bodies. Up to 60% of the human adult body is water!

About 71% of our planet’s surface is covered by water. The oceans hold about 96.5% of all Earth’s water. There is also water in the air as water vapour, in glaciers, and in the ground.

If we took all the water of our planet and put it together, it would be a ball about 1,385 kilometres wide.

But, most of this water is seawater. This is salty and not drinkable. Only a very tiny portion of the water on Earth is drinkable. This is why we have to save water.
