Popular chocolate brand linked to Salmonellosis!

Recommended for Secondary Grades

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), salmonella food poisoning has been reported in eleven European countries. This is linked to a popular Belgian chocolate product that is made there. More than 150 people have been suspected of having salmonellosis.

What is Salmonella?

A type of bacteria that makes one sick from eating food. Salmonellosis is the official name for the sickness caused by the bacteria.

Is Salmonella common?

Salmonella infections fairly common throughout the world. Typically infections are more common in the summer because food rots quickly in hot weather, when it isn’t kept cool.

Few facts about Salmonellosis!

  • Salmonellosis is caused by eating food that has been contaminated with bacteria from animals (mainly eggs, meat, poultry, and milk).
  • Salmonella could spread through the entire food chain, from animal feed to primary production, to households or food service establishments and institutions.
  • Symptoms usually start six to 72 hours after ingesting food or water contaminated with salmonella and can last two to seven days.

Signs of risk and source!

  • At least 113 countries across Europe and the world have received the popular chocolate products during the time of risk, as per WHO.
  • Salmonella bacteria that match the current human cases of infection were found in buttermilk tanks at a factory run by popular chocolate makers in Belgian.
  • As per reports, the factory was forced to close for a short time earlier this month.
  • Symptoms of salmonellosis aren’t very bad, and most people will get better without any special treatment.
  • However, some children and the elderly could be more at risk for dehydration, which could be life-threatening.
