President awards Gandhi Peace Prize – 2015 to 2018

President Ram Nath Kovind awarded the Gandhi Peace Prize for the years 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 today (February 26, 2019) at New Delhi. The award ceremony was held at Darbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhawan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also present for the ceremony.

The award winners are :

2015  – Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari – for his contribution towards Rural* Development, Education and Development of natural resources.
 	2016 – Akshaya Patra Foundation – for providing mid-day meals to millions of children across India and Sulabh International – for improving the condition of sanitation* in poor areas of India as well as the emancipation* of manual scavengers*.
 	2017 – Ekal Abhiyan Trust – for its contribution in providing Education for Rural and Tribal Children in remote* areas pan-India, Rural Empowerment, Gender and Social Equality.
 	2018 – Yohei Sasakawa, Japan – for his contribution in Leprosy Eradication* in India and across the world.

The Gandhi Peace Prize was introduced in 1995 to mark Mahatma Gandhi’s 125th birthday. The prize has many parts – an award of 1 crore rupees, a plaque*, a citation*and a traditional handicraft item.

SOME TERMS:-

*rural – in villages;    *sanitation – toilets and hand-wash;   *emancipation – improving someone’s life;   *scavengers – poor people who search through garbage for food or things that can be sold to get some money;     *remote areas – far from cities or villages;   *eradication – completely removing   *plaque – standing certificate made of wood or metal   *citation – details of the work recorded in writing
