Prices go up, making tummies grumble!
Recommended for Middle Grades
Uh-oh! It seems like the prices of food items in our country are going up, and it’s making people worried. From tomatoes and onions to rice and dal, everything is getting more expensive. Let’s find out why!
Price Surge: Climate Crunch
- The prices of essential food items like rice, wheat, tur dal, sugar, milk, potato, onion, and tomato have been increasing. A government department called the Ministry of Consumer Affairs is keeping an eye on these prices. The price of milk went up by only 0.5%, but the prices of tomatoes, onions, and potatoes increased a lot!
- In Kerala, the price of tomatoes went from ₹45-₹50 per kilogram to ₹100 per kilogram in just one week. In Uttar Pradesh, the price of tomatoes even reached ₹121 per kilogram! The government says these price increases are due to seasonal factors and weather problems.
- The summer heat and heavy rains have affected the supply of vegetables this year. Vegetable sellers are buying the vegetables at higher prices, and that’s why they have to sell them for more money.
- It seems that because of the changing seasons and bad weather, there is a shortage of vegetables. Farmers are having trouble growing them, and it’s harder to transport them when it rains a lot.
- That’s why the prices are going up. Even though the government is keeping an eye on the prices and says they will come down soon, people are worried.
- The high prices are making it difficult for families and small eateries to manage their budgets. Hopefully, things will get better soon, and we can enjoy our favorite food without worrying about the prices!
