Quad Summit 2022!
Recommended for Secondary Grades
At the Quad Summit 2022 in Tokyo, the prime ministers of the United States of America (USA), India, Australia, and Japan reaffirmed their commitment to an Indo-Pacific region that is free, open, inclusive, and strong.
What is Quad?
The Quad, also called the “Quadrilateral Security Dialogue” (QSD), is a group of four countries. It includes the United States of America (USA), India, Australia, and Japan—that meet to talk about security issues.
Key takeaways from the Quad Summit!
Peace and Security
The leaders talked about how the situation in Ukraine is different in each country. Also, what effect these things have had on the Indo-Pacific region. The Quad wants to work with regional partners to make the Indo-Pacific a place where everyone is free and welcome.
All nuclear weapons will be taken off the Korean Peninsula, which is a promise made by the leaders. Terrorist attacks, like the ones on November 26 and in Pathankot, are wrong and should not happen.
COVID-19 and Global Health Security
At the Global COVID-19 Summit, the quad countries promised money and policies worth nearly $3 billion. They have also promised to give almost $500 million to help make new vaccines to stop and control infectious diseases.
Q-CHAMP (Quad Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Package)
The quad leaders intend to follow through on what was decided at COP26 and on the Paris Agreement. They hope to speed up the work to get the world to take climate change more seriously by reaching out to key players in the Indo-Pacific region.
“Quad Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Package” (Q-CHAMP) was introduced at the summit. “Mitigation” and “adaptation” will be the main goals. The other main areas include clean fuel ammonia and carbon recycling.
Infrastructure
The Quad will work over the next five years to increase the amount of infrastructure support and investment in the Indo-Pacific region. The quad leaders believe that they are also committed to solving the problems caused by debt, which have become worse in many countries because of the pandemic.
QUAD Fellowship
The connections between people are the most important part of the Quad, and the leaders are glad that the Quad Fellowship is now accepting applications. The Quad Fellowship will send 100 students to the U.S. each year to get graduate degrees in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)-related fields.
Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA)
- The goal of this project is to work with partners in the region to respond to natural and human disasters.
- It also wants to stop people from fishing without a licence.
- IPMDA will help improve and spread maritime awareness by giving people tools and training.
- The goal of the initiative is to keep the oceans and seas safe and healthy.
- Only if countries in the Indo-Pacific region and other centres in the Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands worked together could this be done.
