Rajya Sabha passes Consumer Protection Bill 2019

Rajya Sabha passes Consumer Protection Bill 2019On 6th August, the Rajya Sabha passed the Consumer Protection Bill 2019. The Lok Sabha has already passed the Bill before.

This bill will replace the Consumer Protection Act, 1986.

The Consumer Protection Bill, 2019 proposes to establish a Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA). The CCPA will promote, protect and enforce consumer rights.

Apart from CCPA, there will also be forums at the district, state and national levels for solving consumer complaints.
 	The bill aims to prevent misleading advertisements in all kinds of media. This can be on television, radio, print, outdoor ads, e-commerce, direct selling or telemarketing.
 	Apart from manufacturers and service providers, celebrity endorsers too will now face punishment if they are part of any false or misleading advertisements.

Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said that this bill has been pending for a long time. The Bill includes almost all recommendations (except 5) made by a Parliamentary Standing Committee.
