Rarest big cat of the world, Amur leopard’s family is growing!

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Have you ever read about the Amur leopard? It is the rarest leopard in the world. It is also the rarest big cat in the world.

Amur leopards live in the mountainous forests of eastern Russia and northern China. It is named after the Amur River, which runs along this region.

The Amur leopard looks slightly different from other leopards as it has thick fur which is pale cream-colored, especially in winter. This is because the region where it lives has a very cold climate.

Amur leopards are usually smaller than African leopards and can weigh about 40 kg. They live for 10-15 years in the wild.

However, do not be fooled by their smaller size! Amur leopards can hunt animals up to three times their size! They can also hunt very quietly, making them “silent killers”.

Sadly, the rarest big cat Amur leopard is very less in number today. This is because of the loss of forests and illegal hunting.

In 2007, only 19–26 wild leopards were left in the region. Thankfully, a national park was created at the Russian and Chinese border to protect it in 2012. Since then, its number has increased to about 80. Hopefully, it will continue to increase.
