Rahul Bajaj Chairman of Bajaj Auto and Head of the Bajaj Group passed away in Pune due to complications in his heart and lungs. He was 83 years old. He was born on June 10, 1938, to the illustrious Bajaj family. His father was a businessman and a politician. Mr Bajaj had resigned as Bajaj Auto Chairman in April last year however he was appointed as the firm’s Chairman Emeritus for five years.

What is Chairman Emeritus?

Chairman Emeritus is an honorary executive officer position. The appointment is usually done by the Board of Directors of a company. A person appointed as Chairman Emeritus must have previously served as Chairman of the Corporation.

Education and Leadership

Mr Bajaj was the grandson of Jamnalal Bajaj (Indian freedom fighter). Rahul Bajaj completed his schooling at the Cathedral and John Connon School, after graduating from St. Stephen’s College and studying law from Government Law College he studied at Harvard Business School.

After his father’s sudden demise in 1972, he took the responsibility of running the family businesses. He launched products during the first year itself that brought his company “Bajaj Auto” national and international fame. His group of companies have made significant footprints in various segments. From automobiles, insurance to home appliances to handling equipment and travel.

Bajaj Auto’s iconic line of two-wheelers made the tagline “Humara Bajaj” famous in the 1980s.

Awards and Recognition

Mr Bajaj is the recipient of many awards. This includes the prestigious Padma Bhushan from the Government of India. In addition, he was the recipient of honorary doctorates from six universities.
